Simple, coach-backed guidance so families know what to look for and what to do. This page is general information, not medical advice. When in doubt, talk to a doctor.
Before practice
- A water bottle comes to every practice, full.
- Gear check: shin guards for soccer, the right shoes, no jewelry.
- Water breaks happen before players are thirsty. A good rule of thumb is a few gulps every 15-20 minutes in the heat.
Head bumps and concussions
- Any hit to the head ends the player's practice. No “shake it off”.
- Watch for headache, dizziness, confusion, nausea, or balance trouble in the next 24-48 hours.
- A player returns only after a doctor says so, not before.
Heat and hydration
- On hot days, expect more breaks and shorter hard drills. That is by design.
- Warning signs: cramps, headache, dizziness, unusual fatigue. Speak up right away.
- Water first for most practices. Sports drinks are fine for long, hard sessions.
Emotional safety
- Mistakes are part of learning. Players are never punished with running or embarrassment.
- Coaches model calm with referees, opponents, and their own team.
- Parents help most from the sideline with encouragement, not instruction.
